Santa Fe College Groundbreaking of the Charles R. Perry Building Construction Institute, The First Green Building on Campus. Santa Fe College recently celebrated the ceremonial groundbreaking of the Charles R. Perry Building Construction Institute Thursday, July 17 at the Northwest Campus. It will be the college's first LEED (green) building. The approximately 27,000-square-foot building, with a budget of $6.4 million, is scheduled to open for classes in fall 2009. The building will house classroom and laboratory space for the college's construction programs. The project represents the fruition of a collaboration between SFC and BANCF, and is employing Ponikvar and Associates (architects), PPI Construction Management, and Moses and Associates (engineering). Although Santa Fe has used construction standards emphasizing energy efficiency since 2001, the Building Construction Institute is the college's first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-registered building, projected to attain a LEED-silver rating. The LEED building rating system was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, a non-profit organization dedicated to sustainable building design, of which SFC is a member. The Building Construction Institute will have a 25 kW photovoltaic solar array. The project will gain LEED points for site selection, alternative transportation (it is close to bus stops and will have bicycle storage and changing rooms), management of the quality and quantity of stormwater runoff, water efficiency, optimized energy performance, on-site renewable energy, etc. .
